“NATURAL HISTORY”

paintings by Charles Yoder

November 17th – January 31st, 2011

23 Images from New York’s Long Island and rural Maine

Jonathan Burden said, “I was fascinated with the harmony created by Charles Yoder’s paintings. His Works of Art enhance the Antique Lighting and Furniture which surround it.”

“Well …..it was great working with Charlie: his work is amazing..its tranquil..peaceful and clear! – James Molina

“One winter night some years ago, I was standing in the snow under some tall white pines in my backyard. There was a clear sky and a full moon; I noticed the light coming through the boughs and shadows playing over the bright snow. It struck me that here was the material for a lifetime’s work.

I saw how I could make art based on the lights and darks of day and night, the varied rhythms of nature and the different effects of the seasons and weather.

Subject matter could come from a glimpse and a painting could be done as a meditation on that glimpse.

Everything I was looking for in my life as an artist was lying at my feet.

My first conscious thought was, ‘How do I paint this?’ and I’ve been trying to figure that out ever since.” – Charles Yoder, November 2010

Within 1 1/2 years from his desire to show in Jonathan Burden’s Gallery, Charles dream was realized. His advice is to “Continue Producing and Be Ready!”

“My works are an examination on the light & dark rhythms found in Nature!” – C. Yoder

I find that like many of my favorite artists, Charles sees deeper than what’s on the surface and  I describe his work as “The window to nature’s soul!” We officially met when his wife, Charlene, invited me to join her for his lecture at the School of Visual Arts on the work of Bob Rauschenberg , a mentor he met in 1971 and worked very closely with. Not only was I blown away with his stature, and I’m 6″3′ in height, but I was also blown away with his passion, commitment, and refined vision (reflective in his work) as he shared his experiences of working with Bob Rauschenberg. Charles Yoder serves as Print Making Instructor at SVA (School of Visual Arts).
