BORN to SWING!
For this weeks “FAB FIVE !” we went DOUBLE for the Holidays! My favorite combination for holiday gift shopping is Unique & Cultural! I decided to share with you my favorite Harlem destinations starting off with a visit to Young, owner of my favorite Cafe, Il Caffe Latte 189 Malcolm X Blvd. Bet 119/120 St. (www.ilcaffelatte.com) for a delicious Mocha Latte and her homemade brownies packed with yummy walnuts. Some of my tasty delights here are the Latin Egg Wrap & Mimosa (breakfast served till 1 pm), Spicy Black Bean Burger Deluxe, and the Black Ink Sea Food Ravioli. Young, Korean born, adds a special flavor to the mix here in multi-cultural Harlem, and also has a background in fashion. In addition to offering a cozy atmosphere, that reflects her fashion esthetics, to eat and drink. Young also offers a catering service.

Ever since the days of baby sitting Jonathan, I can recall is uncanny affinity with fashion, and had a hard time keeping him out of his mother’s closet and jewelry box. I recently celebrated Jonathan by featuring him on my talk show, “ELEMENTS of FIERCE!”
Jonathan is also very involved with the community and recently sponsored “for COLORED GIRLS who considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf” at the Harlem Stage At Aaron Davis Hall, to benefit “The Catch A Falling Star Scholarship” supporting youth affected by domestic violence.

Upon returning from Belgium with her family, Helena wanted to share her favorite discoveries from living abroad with her newfound Harlem community.
Helena’s Concept Shop provides it’s customer a lifestyle of global consciousness, an interconnected awareness. Swing brings to Harlem world-class products from which you can create your own signature style.
I love every moment that I spend in her shop! As someone who has also travelled extensively until 2000, for me it’s a refreshing moment of Déjà vu, and an opportunity to update my style with new discoveries from places I have previously lived.
SWING stimulates all the five senses, as you experience different cultures through fashion, music, interiors, candles/incense, natural beauty products, home decor, and much more.
I adore the Welcoming Committee, a customized Sandstone Ganesh (an Indian deity known as the remover of obstacles) made from the same stone as Harlem Brownstones, and one of the customized mannequins to represent the multi-cultural flavor of Harlem styled from head to toe by Helena and I in Junko Shimada and accessorized by Linda Farrow/Matthew Williamson shades, ADA wrap belt, and jeweled belt by JWL Mei.
Helena selected the Peacock feather as an image of the SWING identity and discovered that it was a symbol for eighteenth century fine tailors. I love the fact that it also represents renewal, well-being, endless love, and eternal life!
Helena Greene is also the founder/creative director of HELENA GREENE, a “Made In Harlem” luxury label.
The artists are Raul Rivera and Noah McDonaugh. Raul and Helena were childhood friends. Raul and his friend, Noah are long time graffiti artists.
